FEBRUARY 12 2009
Sifu David Keegan, head of Metal Tiger Academy and a Senior International Instructor (United Kingdom Budo Federation and TEMAA) was recently invited to teach Tai Chi and Chi Kung exercises to a group of school children who are studying Chinese culture for a project. Here is his report:

"Recently I was invited to take part in Chinese cultural lessons and studies at St. Johns RC Primary School, Burscough, Lancashire by Teacher Mrs (Paula) Fitzsimmons.
Her class 2 students had been studying Chinese culture, and had incorporated this into Art classes as well. I was shown projects that had been done by the students lining the walls of St. Johns School. Everything from lanterns, Music, dragons and characters from the language.
On entering the class I was greeted by Gung Hei Fat Choy, wishing me the Chinese greeting of Happy New year.
I explained briefly about Tai Chi and the Students who were already kitted out in the St. Johns School P.E. kit were keen to take part.
The Class 2 students were given the designated class title of “Red Dragon Class” in association with Bushinkai Academy for their achievements in Chinese cultural studies.
A demonstration of Yang style bare hand form and Sword form was given to which the students were most attentive.
Then the students were given their chance to practice Ba Duan Jin, the 8 Tai Chi exercises. Given that the students were in the seven year old age range, their focus and attention to detail was second to none. They were attentive, willing to learn and enjoyed what they were doing. They are a credit to St. Johns School.
Mrs. Fitzsimmons said they were like sponges ready and willing to absorb knowledge, not only did I find this to be true of these students, but wished that this work ethic was prevalent in other schools and colleges.
I would like to take the opportunity to thank the students for their warm welcome and for their hard work and efforts; it was most rewarding for me as an International Tai Chi instructor to have taken part in this project by St. Johns School.
So many thanks to Students; Michael, Kyle, Callum, Lucy, Stephanie, Keenan, Luke, Finley, Isabelle, Natasha, Hannah, Sonny ,Andrew, Lucy, Lauren, Ross, Alex, Grace, Thomas, Callum, Inesa, Alfie, Ewan. (Hopefully I have not missed anyone out.)"

WHITE LION ACADEMY
Class Timetable announcement by Simon Keegan:

This Tuesday will be the last Toshu Jutsu class at Sunshine Studios - I will be handing the slot over to Julie where it will be run as a Tai Chi class. I will teach it for a while until she's ready to take over.
Julie has injured her arm and is unable to train in Toshu Jutsu for the time-being but has found Tai Chi beneficial.
Our Toshu Jutsu class will be moved to Friday nights back at Van Dangs. Ken Dang is giving me the top floor for the whole night. The class will be 6.00-8.00 with the option to stay behind as long as we like.
Jamie will soon be opening a club (perhaps in Hyde) on a Monday evening as well - his website is now up and running.
I will make regular appearances in Jamie and Julie's Dojos.

So the week will be:
Monday (TBA) - Toshu Jutsu with Jamie
Tuesday (8.00-9.00pm) - Tai Chi with Julie
Friday (6.00-8.00) - Toshu Jutsu with me

JANUARY 26
Happy Chinese New Year!!! (Gung hay fat choy!)
The ITV tv station contacted Bushinkai and asked us to perform a demonstration of Chinese forms on the New Year show being broadcast on Wednesday (and presented by Alan Titchmarsh for some reason). Unfortunately their researcher's idea of martial arts was somersaults, backflips and cartwheels down steps. Needless to say we declined!

JULY 13 2008 Memo from Kaicho Simon Keegan:
Can all students please try and get their names down for our 8th Anniversary Course to be held weekend of 08.08.08 at the Dai Nippon Butokukai UK Headquarters (Rochdale). We will hopefully have teaching senior Jujutsu teachers such as Allan Tattersall (9th Dan) and Jim Walker (6th Dan), senior Karate teachers such as Trevor Gilbert (6th Dan) and Reiner Parsons (6th Dan) as well as instruction in Judo, Iaido, Aikijujutsu and of course Toshu Jutsu and Tai Chi.
Congratulations to Metal Tiger Dojo for getting a very good turnout of late, especially as most students are from different towns.
White Lion Dojo (our new Toshu Jutsu Hombu at Sunshine Studios) is working out very well, in a vibrant atmosphere. Please can students try and arrive before 7.30 so we can maximise Dojo time.
I have been discussing with Club Secretary Jamie some new proposals, one of which is a monthly lesson or mini seminar lasting about 3-4 hours which will be just £10 and cover grading revision.
I would also urge all students to consider investing in weapons and pads as appropriate to their training.
Yours in Budo
Simon

Sunshine Studios are possibly the UK's largest arts studio and already home to various classes in martial arts and performing arts. Famously it is the centre where the winner of 'Britain's Got Talent' trains his dance moves.
The building is over 5 floors and covers over 25,000 sq/ft.

METAL TIGER DOJO NEWS
April 8 2008
David Keegan has been confirmed as an Affiliate of the Institute for Learning (IfL). This is in recognition of his Teaching practice in Ormskirk & Skelmersdale Colleges (Tai Chi) and his teaching (International Trade) in the Export and Freight Industry over the last twenty years. The Institute for Learning is the professional body for teachers, trainers and tutors in the learning and skills sector.
As an active participant David hopes to be involved in internal and external consultation activities and to start a special interest group for martial arts taught in schools and colleges throughout the country.
His aim is to create a distinct and identifiable professional identity for martial art teachers in the learning and skills sector. This will be over and above the excellent associations that they are already members of like TEMAA.
This hopefully will let them achieve parity of esteem with other professionals.

SILVER PHOENIX DOJO NEWS

March 6 2008
International Women’s Week 2008.
Event: Wednesday 5th March 2008.
In the magnificent setting of the Cunard Building, (one of Liverpool’s iconic 'Three Graces'), Bushinkai were proud to be asked to stage an event for International Women’s week.
Liverpool study group leader Paul Pinnington and Tai Chi Coach Dave Keegan gave a demonstration to a packed house in the setting overlooking the River Mersey of the Tai Chi related Ba Duan Jin.
The exercises were demonstrated and a talk given on the history and benefits of these eight 'tendon stretching' exercises also known as the eight pieces of brocade, due to the value people have put on them for centuries.
Although a formal session, the ladies who attended also had a chance to practice the exercises as well, the lesson was enjoyed by women of all ages many of whom were enthusiastic and some have already expressed an interest in joining the Bushinkai study group in Liverpool lead by Paul.
